WordPress.com vs WordPress.org – What’s the Difference and Which Option Fits You
If you’re just getting started with building a website, you’ve probably come across two versions of WordPress: WordPress.com and WordPress.org. Even though the names are almost identical, the differences between them are essential – especially when it comes to control, costs, and available features.
What is WordPress.com?
WordPress.com is an all-in-one platform hosted by Automattic (the company behind WordPress), where you can build a site without dealing with hosting or technical maintenance. In practice, it’s a “software as a service” (SaaS) offering.
WordPress.com advantages:
- No hosting required – it’s included
- You don’t have to handle updates or backups
- You can create a free site (with limitations)
WordPress.com disadvantages:
- Limited functionality on the free plan
- You can’t install custom plugins on the free plan
- Your domain will look like yoursite.wordpress.com unless you pay
- Limited control over code and design
- You can’t fully monetize the site (e.g., running your own ads)
What is WordPress.org?
WordPress.org is the self-hosted version: you download the platform and install it on your own server (using a web hosting provider you choose). You get full freedom over your website – but you’re also responsible for maintaining it.
WordPress.org advantages:
- Full control over the site and its code
- You can install any theme or plugin
- You can monetize however you want (AdSense, direct ads, eCommerce, etc.)
- Ideal for complex sites or business use
WordPress.org disadvantages:
- You need paid hosting
- You must handle updates, backups, and security (or work with a specialized company)
- We recommend WordPress.org for most of our clients, because it offers an excellent balance between performance, customization, and scalability.
